Lash Artists — Let’s Talk Lash Shampoos & Acrylates

Not all lash shampoos are made equal — especially imported concentrated ones that don’t follow UK or EU cosmetic safety standards.

One ingredient group that always makes me pause is acrylates.

What are acrylates & why should you care?

Acrylates are synthetic polymers — sounds fancy, right? They’re used to thicken formulas, help products foam, or give them that “silky” texture.

You’ll spot them listed as:

Acrylates copolymer

Acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer

Polyacrylate-1 crosspolymer

These are NOT automatically eye-safe. And they do not belong near your client's lash line unless they’re 100% cosmetic-grade and tested for use around the eyes.

Why are acrylates risky in lash shampoos?

1. ❌ Not made for the eye area — industrial versions can cause irritation or redness.

2. ❌ Potential allergens — some clients develop sensitivities with repeated use.

3. ❌ Cheap imports = low regulation — some products sneak in acrylates not even allowed in the UK/EU.

4. ❌ Not always clearly listed — they’re often hidden behind vague names like "polymer" or even just “fragrance.”

What should you look for instead?

Cosmetic-grade only (suitable for the eyes)

Transparent ingredient list (no hidden nasties)

UK/EU manufactured or from countries with strong cosmetic laws

Patch tested and eye-safe (especially for sensitive clients)

At LadybugLashes, we say no thanks to  acrylates.

Our lash shampoos are cosmetic-grade, UK-manufactured, and eye-safe.

Because your clients’ lashes (and their eye health) deserve better.
