Pregnancy & Lash Lifting: A Lash Artist’s Perspective

As lash artists, we’re often asked: “Can I still get a lash lift if I’m pregnant?” The truth? There’s no black-and-white answer — but there are important things to consider if you're expecting and still want to keep your lashes looking fabulous.

Can Pregnant Clients Get a Lash Lift?

From a professional standpoint, lash lifts aren’t specifically tested on pregnant or breastfeeding women, meaning there’s no official medical go-ahead or red flag. This puts us in a bit of a grey area. Most manufacturers, insurance providers, and safety guidelines recommend avoiding chemical treatments during pregnancy simply because there’s a lack of research — not because they've been proven harmful.

As lash artists, we have a duty of care, so we usually advise clients to consult with their GP or midwife before going ahead with a lash lift during pregnancy. Everyone’s body is different, and healthcare professionals are best placed to assess any potential risks.

What Are the Potential Risks?

Here’s what we consider when performing lash lifts on pregnant clients:

Increased Sensitivity

Pregnancy can make your skin and eyes more reactive. Even if you’ve had lash lifts in the past without issue, you might suddenly experience irritation, stinging, or redness.

Allergic Reactions

Hormonal shifts can trigger unexpected reactions. For this reason, a patch test is always a must, even if you’ve been treated before.

Chemical Exposure

Lash lift solutions contain perming agents and other active ingredients. While these aren’t absorbed in large quantities, it’s still technically a chemical treatment near the eyes — which is why some clients choose to avoid it altogether during pregnancy.

Comfort During Treatment

Let’s be real — lying flat for 45+ minutes with your eyes shut isn’t the most comfortable position in the later stages of pregnancy. We always check if a client is comfortable or needs to adjust positions.

Hormonal Impact on Results

Hormones can change hair texture and how it reacts to chemicals. In some cases, lifts don’t “take” as well, or lashes may process unevenly.

So… Is It Safe?

The honest answer? It depends.

Lash lifts are generally very low-risk and safe in the hands of a trained professional, but pregnancy introduces variables that we can’t always predict. Many lash artists (ourselves included) will either decline to perform lash lifts during pregnancy or only do so with written consent and medical clearance.

If you're a client considering a lift during pregnancy:

Consult your doctor or midwife first

Ensure you’re patch tested

Be honest about how far along you are

Work with a fully trained, insured professional

And if you’re a lash artist: Always put client safety first. No treatment is worth risking your reputation or your client’s health.
