Let's Talk Patch Testing — The Right Way 🧪✨
Patch testing is not optional — it's a must. But let’s clear up some major confusion around how to do it properly. Because there's a lot of outdated advice still floating around.
Back in the day, people used to do patch tests for lash glue by applying it to the client’s arm (yes, really 😬). But here's the thing: lash glue should NEVER touch the skin — not even for a test.
Why That Old-School Method Doesn’t Work
That approach came from how we test things like hair dye or lash lift solutions, which do come in contact with skin. Lash glue? Completely different story.
Lash adhesive is exothermic – meaning it heats up as it cures. So putting it on skin can cause a mild burn or irritation, leading to a false positive (aka making it look like the client’s allergic when they’re actually not).
The Correct Way to Patch Test Lash Glue 👇
✅ Apply 5 to 10 lash extensions per eye, using the actual glue you'll use for the full set.
This way, you're testing it in the form it's actually intended to be used — on the lashes, not the skin.
BUT — even this method isn’t foolproof. Because you’re using such a tiny amount, you could still get a false negative. Meaning the client might still react later.
When & Why You Should Always Patch Test
With our lash glues, we require a patch test 24 to 48 hours before the appointment. The best time? During your consultation. That way you can:
✔️ Go over lash styles
✔️ Talk about their desired look
✔️ Make sure you’ve got the right lengths and curls in stock
✔️ AND get the patch test done all in one go
Win-win. ✅
A Quick Legal Reality Check ⚖️
You must offer a patch test to all clients. It’s not the client’s responsibility to ask for one.
If a client has a reaction and you didn’t offer a test, waivers won't protect you. Under the Health & Safety Act, it’s your job to manage the risk — not the client’s.
Bottom Line:
-
❌ Never apply glue directly to the skin
-
✅ Patch test properly with 5–10 lashes per eye
-
✅ Always offer a test — don’t wait to be asked
-
✅ Book it with the consultation
