Changing lash adhesive can feel like a much bigger decision than simply trying a new product.
When you have an adhesive you know, trust and understand, changing it can be daunting, particularly when your retention and your reputation depend on it.
We understand that feeling because, in January 2024, Ladybug Lashes changed an entire adhesive range.
And at the time, we had considerably more than one bottle to worry about.
Ladybug Lashes had already become known for excellent retention, and we carried around nine different adhesives. Changing the system therefore wasn’t a decision we took lightly. We knew some artists wouldn’t like change. We knew we could lose customers. And we knew our new range had to earn the trust our existing adhesives already had.
Why Did We Change?
The process actually began in late 2023.
After seeing industry discussions around lash adhesive formulations, we started looking much more closely at the products we were selling and the information available about them.
That led to more questions.
And then even more questions.
Eventually, we reached a point where we wanted greater transparency and a cosmetic-grade UK-manufactured system that we could confidently stand behind.
We began the transition gradually with products such as our pH Balancer, Super Bonder and Gel Remover before tackling the part that felt considerably scarier: the adhesives themselves.
We Didn't Want to Change Everything Artists Already Loved
Our UK manufacturer took time to understand our existing adhesive range and the characteristics our artists were already familiar with.
We weren't trying to make every glue feel completely different.
We wanted to retain important characteristics such as curing speed and viscosity wherever possible, keeping Meadow thin-to-medium, for example, while Damselfly remained deliberately thin and extremely fast.
Then came the testing.
Lots of it.
Different formulations were tested by working lash artists before we eventually condensed what had been a much larger adhesive range into the more considered collection we have today.
And that experience is one of the biggest reasons we believe so strongly in samples.
We made one of the largest product decisions in our own business by testing first. We think lash artists should be able to do the same.
Changing Adhesives Changed Our Education Too
One of the products we discontinued was Butterfly, an adhesive our customers knew extremely well.
At the time, we had repeated the very broad temperature and humidity information supplied to us for that adhesive. As we began learning much more about cyanoacrylate chemistry and how environmental conditions affect curing, our approach changed.
We realised there is an important difference between the conditions in which an adhesive can work and the conditions in which it is expected to work at its best.
That is why today you'll see Ladybug Lashes talk about ideal working conditions.
Our adhesives can be flexible outside those figures, but we'd rather give artists meaningful guidance about where a formulation should perform most predictably than suggest temperature and humidity simply don't matter.
And that enormous learning curve eventually became the education you see throughout Ladybug Lashes today.
So if you've ever looked at a new bottle of adhesive and thought:
“But what if I change it and hate it?”
We really do understand.
You might be nervous about changing one glue.
We changed an entire system.
Test it. Learn how it behaves. Give yourself time to adjust.
That's exactly what we did.
