Preparing Natural Lashes for Extensions

Successful lash application starts with a clean, properly prepared natural lash.

Oil, makeup, skincare residue and other contaminants can interfere with adhesive attachment, which is why cleansing is an important part of professional lash preparation.

But that doesn't mean every client needs multiple pre-treatment products layered onto their lashes.

The aim is to identify what the lashes actually need and prepare them accordingly.

Start with Clean Lashes

Natural lashes should be thoroughly cleansed before application.

A professional lash shampoo helps remove makeup, oils and everyday residue from the lashes and surrounding area.

Rinse thoroughly and make sure the lashes are properly dried before moving on to your next preparation step.

For many clients, good cleansing may be all the preparation required.

When Would You Use a pH Balancer?

A pH Balancer can be used when the natural lashes would benefit from additional preparation before adhesive application.

Rather than automatically applying it to every client, assess the lashes and use it as part of a targeted pre-treatment routine.

This helps avoid the common mistake of assuming that adding more products will automatically improve retention.

What Is a Retention Booster?

A Retention Booster is another optional preparation step designed for situations where additional lash preparation may be useful.

Environmental conditions matter too.

If you're already working in conditions where your adhesive is curing quickly, adding products that further influence the lash surface or adhesive behaviour may not be what you need.

Your adhesive, room conditions and natural lashes should all be considered together.

Do You Need Primer on Every Client?

Not necessarily.

Primer can be useful in certain circumstances, but strongly cleansing or high-alcohol products aren't automatically the answer to every retention problem.

Over-preparing the lashes can be just as unhelpful as under-preparing them.

Before reaching for another product, consider whether the lashes are genuinely oily or contaminated and whether your existing cleansing routine is already sufficient.

Pre-Treatment & Lash Adhesive Work Together

Pre-treatment shouldn't be considered separately from your adhesive.

Your adhesive speed is influenced by factors including temperature, humidity, application technique and the surface you're attaching to.

If you're experiencing retention problems, don't automatically assume you need another prep product.

Consider the whole application:

  • Are the natural lashes thoroughly clean?

  • Is your adhesive suited to your working speed?

  • Are your temperature and humidity suitable?

  • Are you using the correct amount of adhesive?

  • Is your attachment secure?

  • Are you using a pre-treatment product the lashes don't actually need?

Good retention comes from getting these factors working together.

Build a Pre-Treatment Routine That Makes Sense

There isn't one pre-treatment routine that every client needs.

Start with thorough cleansing, assess the natural lashes and then introduce additional preparation products only where they're useful.

Our professional pre-treatment collection gives you different options for cleansing, balancing and preparing natural lashes, allowing you to choose the products that suit the client, your adhesive and your working environment.
