If you've ever looked at a lash tray and wondered what 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, 0.15, 0.20 or 0.25 actually mean, you're not alone.

These numbers refer to the diameter of each individual lash fibre.

Put simply:

The bigger the number, the thicker the individual lash fibre.

But that doesn't mean one diameter is automatically better than another.

The right diameter depends on the health and strength of the client's natural lashes, the style you're creating and how many fibres you're applying.

What Does Lash Diameter Mean?

Lash diameter refers to the thickness of an individual lash extension.

So, from thicker to finer:

0.25 → thicker

0.20

0.15

0.07

0.05

0.03 → finer

As the diameter becomes smaller, each individual fibre becomes finer.

This is why finer diameters are used when multiple fibres are combined to create volume or multi-lash styles.

What Are 0.25 Lashes Used For?

0.25 lashes are a thicker individual fibre.

At Ladybug Lashes, we offer 0.25 in our Flat Classic range.

Flat lashes have a different base construction from traditional round classic extensions, so diameter alone doesn't tell you everything about how an extension will behave or whether it is right for a particular client.

As with every diameter, the natural lash should always be assessed first.

What Are 0.20 Lashes Used For?

0.20 is another popular Flat Classic diameter.

It gives a defined classic appearance while still being applied as one extension to one suitable natural lash.

However, the fact that a client wants a stronger classic look doesn't automatically mean 0.20 is right for them.

The strength and condition of their natural lashes should always come first.

What Are 0.15 Lashes Used For?

0.15 Flat Classics provide a finer option than 0.20 or 0.25.

They can be useful when an artist wants a classic effect using a finer individual extension.

Again, there isn't one diameter that is automatically correct for every classic client.

Assess the natural lashes and choose accordingly.

What Are 0.07 Lashes Used For?

0.07 is a fine lash fibre commonly used in lighter multi-lash and volume styles.

At Ladybug Lashes, you'll see 0.07 used in our U Collection and selected Clover Lashes.

For example:

2D U 0.07 = two 0.07 fibres
3D U 0.07 = three 0.07 fibres
4D U 0.07 = four 0.07 fibres
5D U 0.07 = five 0.07 fibres

Our 4D and 6D Clover lashes are also available in 0.07.

We do not offer 8D or 10D Clover in 0.07. As the number of fibres increases, we use a finer 0.05 diameter instead.

This is a simple example of why you need to look at both the diameter and the D number.

The 0.07 tells you how thick each individual fibre is.

The 2D, 4D or 6D tells you how many fibres make up that lash or fan.

What Are 0.05 Lashes Used For?

0.05 is finer than 0.07 and is commonly used for fuller multi-lash and volume styles.

Our Clover Lash collection is a good example.

You'll find:

4D Clover 0.05
6D Clover 0.05
8D Clover 0.05
10D Clover 0.05

So with our Clover collection:

4D and 6D → available in 0.05 and 0.07

8D and 10D → available in 0.05 only

This means artists can choose between different dimensions while also understanding the thickness of the individual fibres being used.

What Are 0.03 Lashes Used For?

0.03 is an extremely fine lash fibre.

It is commonly used for higher-dimensional and mega-volume styles where more individual fibres are combined to create a fan.

Although the fan may contain more fibres, each individual fibre is extremely fine.

This brings us to one of the most important things to understand about lash trays.

What Does 4D, 6D, 8D or 10D Mean?

The D number isn't the diameter.

It tells you how many individual lash fibres are in the fan.

So:

4D = 4 fibres

6D = 6 fibres

8D = 8 fibres

10D = 10 fibres

The diameter tells you how thick each of those fibres is.

For example:

4D 0.07 = four 0.07 fibres

10D 0.05 = ten 0.05 fibres

This is why you need to look at both numbers, rather than looking at the D number alone.

Does a Higher D Number Automatically Mean a Lash Fan Is Too Heavy?

No.

The D number only tells you how many fibres are in the fan.

You also need to know the diameter of those individual fibres and assess the finished fan.

More fibres generally need finer individual fibres.

That's why, for example, Ladybug Lashes offers 8D and 10D Clover in 0.05 rather than 0.07.

Most importantly, the finished lash or fan must be suitable for the client's natural lash.

How Does the Natural Lash Affect Which Diameter I Should Use?

The health, strength and thickness of the client's natural lashes should always come first.

A strong, healthy natural lash may be able to support a thicker extension or fuller fan than a very fine, weak or damaged lash.

This means the same diameter or fan will not be suitable for every client.

Before choosing a lash extension, assess:

  • The thickness of the natural lash
  • The overall health and condition of the lash
  • Whether the lash is fine, weak or damaged
  • How many fibres you plan to apply
  • The diameter of those fibres

If the natural lash is very fine or weak, choose a lighter option.

If the natural lash is strong and healthy, you may have more choice.

The style the client wants should never come before the health of the natural lash.

Can I Use the Same Lash Diameter on Every Client?

No.

Natural lashes vary enormously.

One client may have strong, healthy natural lashes while another may have much finer or weaker lashes.

Even on the same client, natural lash strength can vary across the lash line.

This is why there isn't one universal:

“Use this diameter for every client”

rule.

Assess the natural lashes in front of you.

Is a Thicker Lash Diameter Better?

Not necessarily.

Thicker doesn't mean better, just as finer doesn't automatically mean better.

Different diameters allow you to create different lash styles.

A client wanting a Flat Classic set may require a completely different product from somebody wanting soft volume or mega volume.

The aim is to create the desired look while choosing something appropriate for the natural lashes.

Is a Smaller Lash Diameter Always Better?

Not automatically.

A finer individual fibre is lighter than a thicker individual fibre, but artists also need to consider how many fibres are being applied together.

That's why looking at just one number doesn't tell you everything.

You need to consider the whole lash or fan.

Why Do Lash Brands Offer So Many Different Diameters?

Because there isn't one type of natural lash and there isn't one type of lash set.

Different diameters allow professional artists to create:

  • Flat Classic sets
  • Light volume
  • Fuller volume
  • Mega volume
  • Textured sets
  • Different ready-made multi-lash styles

They also give artists more choice when working with clients whose natural lashes vary in strength and condition.

How Do I Choose the Right Lash Diameter?

Start with the natural lash.

Before thinking about the look you want to create, assess the health, strength and thickness of the client's natural lashes.

Then ask yourself:

What are the client's natural lashes like?

What style am I creating?

Am I applying one extension or multiple fibres?

What diameter are the individual fibres?

Is the finished extension or fan appropriate for this natural lash?

Don't choose purely because a particular diameter or dimension is popular.

Choose what's appropriate for the client in front of you.

Diameter vs Dimension: The Simple Version

If all the numbers are getting confusing, remember:

Diameter = thickness of each individual fibre.

D = number of fibres in the fan.

So:

0.07 = fibre thickness

4D = four fibres

4D 0.07 = four individual 0.07 fibres in one fan

That's it.

No calculator required.

Final Thoughts

Understanding lash diameter becomes much easier once you know what the numbers actually mean.

0.25, 0.20 and 0.15 are thicker individual fibres available within our Flat Classic ranges.

0.07, 0.05 and 0.03 are progressively finer fibres used across different volume and multi-lash styles.

Our Clover collection is a good example of how diameter and dimension work together:

4D and 6D Clover are available in both 0.05 and 0.07.

8D and 10D Clover are available in 0.05 only.

But there is no single best lash diameter.

The right choice depends on the health and strength of the natural lashes, the number of fibres being applied and the finished style you're creating.

Always assess the client's natural lashes and work within your professional training.

Don't just read the number on the tray - understand what the number means.
